The ATEX Directive offers two ways to perform conformity assessment: 1. Internal Production Control or CE marking self-certification: the manufacturer performs the conformity assessment and documents the assessment in his own right. The internal production control applies to equipment and devices under Group II, Category 3. 2.

“ATEX Certification is a certification of equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres in the European Union. What is an ATEX coding? The ATEX code is an alphanumeric string that denotes the certification achieved by the product along with the environment and conditions it is suitable for. The code can be broken down into a prefix, for example: CE0518 Ex II 2 G and suffix, for example: Ex d IIC T6 Gb. • When people refer to ATEX colloquially, they usually mean 94/9/EC • Adoption in all countries has been on an equal basis in order to ensure an even playing field for TRADE • The only differences relate to criminal penalties for non-compliance (subsidiarity) • Because of the equality, it is normal to refer to ATEX as if it is the law Marking according to Directive 2014/34/EU (previously 94/9/EG) (ATEX) Marking according to IEC/CENELEC/CSA standard 60079-0 Typical marking of electrical equipment for use in explosive dust atmospheres (EU/ATEX/IECEx): Electrical types of protection for explosive atmospheres due to fl ammable gases, vapours and mists Type Protec-tion level Explaining ATEX Group Markings. Groups define the dust and gas protections. A group III rating implies that the enclosure is only rated to safeguard against the infiltration of dust. A group II rating implies that the enclosure is protected against both gas and dust. The marking from EN 13463-1 could not be used at the international level, since it was intertwined with the legal marking of the ATEX Directive.

In order to meet the requirements of the ATEX Directive, products must bear the Distinctive Community Mark (‘Ex’ in hexagon) and CE marking before being sold in the EU. Intertek can test and certify your products for ‘Ex’ and CE marks for the IEC/EN 60079 and ISO/IEC/EN 80079 series of Standards for explosive atmosphere standards. ATEX Non-Electrical Certification. ATEX Non-electrical certification has always been part of ATEX Certification, however, the fact that even Zone 1 certification could be ‘self certified’ for non-electrical equipment (with the resulting file lodged with a Notified Body) has meant that there has been little control as to the depth and accuracy of the assessment. Marking and Documentation In Europe the placing on the market of equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres is carried out according to Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX 95). In addition to the CE marking, further markings are required by the direc - tive.

Although a majority of people are aware that they should use products that are certified for safety, they do not always understand what the protection codes mean in the actual world, or the subtle differences between the certifying standards. The European ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU controls the manufacture and import of many products for use in explosive atmospheres, including non-electrical equipment. It requires that the product is safe, and carries a label indicating the conditions under which it is approved for use. All ATEX equipment must bear the CE marking.
